Costa Rica's two seasons

Broadly, Costa Rica has a drier season from roughly December to April, and a greener, wetter season from May to November. The dry season generally means more predictable trail conditions and less rain; the green season brings lusher landscapes but a higher chance of rain and muddier trail sections, especially at higher elevations.

Two coasts, two patterns

El Camino crosses from the Caribbean to the Pacific, and Costa Rica's two coasts don't share exactly the same rainfall calendar — the Caribbean side tends to stay wetter year-round than the Pacific side. That means the trail can see rain at almost any time of year, regardless of the general dry/green season split.

If you have flexibility, the December–April window generally offers the most consistent conditions for river crossings and the mountain stages through the Cordillera de Talamanca.
